Process for the preparation of sunitinib malate form I via sunitinib acetate and polymorphs of said intermediate.

A process for preparing crystalline form 1 of sunitinib malate characterized by diffraction peaks at about 13.2 and 24.2 degrees two-theta comprising reacting Sunitinib base, a weak acid and L-malic acid in alcohol or a mixture of water and alcohol, and precipitating said crystalline form 1 of Sunitinib malate.
