Abstract
The present invention provides a supported reactant for in situ remediation of soil and/or groundwater contaminated with a halogenated hydrocarbon consisting essentially of an adsorbent impregnated with zero valent iron, wherein the adsorbent is capable of adsorbing the halogenated hydrocarbon. In one embodiment, the adsorbent is activated carbon.
Claims5
A method of preparing a supported reactant for remediation of soil, wastewater, or groundwater contaminated with a halogenated hydrocarbon, comprising:
- spraying an adsorbent, comprising activated carbon, with a solution of water soluble iron salt to produce an intermediate product;
- and
- in reducing conditions, heating the intermediate product at temperatures between 550 and 800° C. to produce a reactant with pores impregnated with a non-toxic metal,
- wherein the produced reactant has a pH above 7.0 and
- wherein the adsorbent further comprises magnesium hydroxide.
