Claims23
A club head comprising:
- a strike portion comprising:
- a strike face comprising a first groove;
- a back face opposite the strike face;
- and
- a first trench set at the back face;
- wherein:
- the club head comprises at least one of a wedge-type head or an iron-type head;
- the first trench set comprises:
- a first trench comprising:
- first and second first-trench shallow portions;
- first, second, and third first-trench deep portions;
- a first trench centerline extending along a center of each of the first-trench shallow portions and of each of the first-trench deep portions;
- a second trench comprising:
- first and second second-trench shallow portions;
- first, second, and third second-trench deep portions;
- and
- a first rib between the first and second trenches;
- the first first-trench shallow portion is:
- bounded by both the first and second first-trench deep portions;
- and
- shallower than each of the first and second first-trench deep portions;
- the second first-trench shallow portion is:
- bounded by both the second and third first-trench deep portions;
- and
- shallower than each of the second and third first-trench deep portions;
- the first rib comprises a first rib centerline parallel to the first trench centerline;
- centerpoints of the first first-trench deep portion and of the first second-trench deep portion lie along a first line that perpendicularly intersects the first rib centerline;
- and
- centerpoints of the second first-trench deep portion and of the second second-trench deep portion lie along a second line that perpendicularly intersects the first rib centerline.

A club head comprising:
- a strike face;
- a back face opposite the strike face;
- a first trench set comprising a first trench and a second trench in the back face;
- and
- a loft plane of the strike face;
- wherein:
- the first trench comprises:
- a first shallow portion set comprising a plurality of first-trench shallow portions;
- and
- a first deep portion set comprising a plurality of first-trench deep portions;
- the plurality of first-trench deep portions are interleaved with the plurality of first-trench shallow portions;
- the plurality of first-trench shallow portions extends into the back face;
- the plurality of first-trench deep portions extend deeper into the back face than the plurality of first-trench shallow portions;
- the back face comprises a first rib between the first and second trenches;
- and
- the first rib comprises a wall that is substantially perpendicular to the loft plane.

A method for manufacturing a club head, the method comprising:
- providing a strike face;
- providing a back face opposite the strike face;
- forming a first trench into the back face;
- wherein:
- the first trench comprises:
- a first shallow portion set comprising a plurality of first-trench shallow portions;
- and
- a first deep portion set comprising a plurality of first-trench deep portions;
- the plurality of first-trench deep portions are interleaved with the plurality of first-trench shallow portions;
- forming the first trench into the back face comprises:
- moving one of a first end mill or the back face relative to another one of the first end mill or the back face along a trench length for the first trench while:
- extending the first end mill a shallow distance into the back face to form the first shallow portion set;
- and
- extending the first end mill a deep distance into the back face to form the first deep portion set;
- and
- the deep distance is greater than the shallow distance such that the plurality of first-trench deep portions extend deeper into the back face than the plurality of first-trench shallow portions.
