Abstract
The invention is a wind resistant celestial tracking apparatus that uses gravitational forces acting on the moving elements of the structure to provide overturning resistance. A molded self curing compound, such as reinforced concrete, is used as the structural material that provides the mass, and thus the gravitational overturning resistance that reduces or eliminates the need for a massive ballasted or dug-in foundation. The combination of these features potentially lowers cost significantly over that of tracking apparatuses found in prior art. The invention is appropriate for use in any celestial tracking application with any number of axes of motion, but is particularly useful in two axis solar energy collection systems.
Claims10
A wind resistant celestial tracking apparatus comprising:
- a support structure mounted on a surface at one or more contact surfaces, with said support structure having a first center of mass;
- a tracking assembly having a second center of mass and being pivotally coupled to said support structure about a substantially horizontal first axis, said tracking assembly being configured to pivot about said substantially horizontal first axis, said second center of mass being located at an offset from said substantially horizontal first axis;
- a payload assembly mounted on said tracking assembly along a second axis that is substantially perpendicular to said substantially horizontal first axis, said payload assembly being configured to pivot about said second axis, comprising a third center of mass, and being an array of one or more photovoltaic modules;
- a contact region, said boundary of which is in contact with said one or more contact surfaces;
- an overturning axis coincident with one or more points along said boundary of said contact region and not passing through said contact region;
- a net wind moment resulting from a wind pressure profile acting on said wind resistant celestial tracking apparatus about said overturning axis;
- a net gravitational moment resulting from gravitational forces acting on said first center of mass, said second center of mass, and said third center of mass about said overturning axis;
- and
- a net overturning moment maximized about said overturning axis in a direction acting to overturn said wind resistant celestial tracking apparatus and resulting from a combination of said net wind moment and said net gravitational moment, wherein the magnitude of said net gravitational moment is greater than the magnitude of said net wind moment, and the magnitude of a net contribution to said net gravitational moment from said second center of mass and said third center of mass is greater than the magnitude of a contribution from said first center of mass.
A tilt-roll tracking apparatus comprising:
- a support structure mounted on a surface, the support structure comprising peripheral edges defining overturn axes of the tilt-roll tracking apparatus and a first center of mass;
- a tilt structure that comprises an axle and is pivotally coupled to the support structure at the axle, the tilt structure being configured to pivot about a substantially horizontal tilt axis that passes through a centerline of the axle, and the tilt structure further having a second center of mass that is located at an offset from the substantially horizontal tilt axis;
- a roll structure pivotally coupled to the tilt structure, and the roll structure being configured to pivot about a roll axis that is substantially perpendicular to the substantially horizontal tilt axis;
- and
- a payload device coupled to the roll structure, and the payload device being configured to interact with electromagnetic radiation, the payload device and the roll structure having a third center of mass;
- wherein a magnitude of a net contribution to a net gravitational moment about the overturn axes from the second center of mass and the third center of mass is greater than a magnitude of a contribution to the net gravitational moment about the overturn axes from the first center of mass.
