System and method for transporting inventory items

A method for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• moving a mobile drive unit to a first point within a workspace, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• docking the mobile drive unit with the inventory holder;
• moving the mobile drive unit and the inventory holder to a second point within the workspace, wherein, the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• and
• moving the inventory holder to a third point within the workspace using the conveyance equipment, wherein the conveyance equipment comprises a drive lift and wherein moving the inventory holder to a third point comprises moving the inventory holder between a first floor and a second floor of a workspace using the drive lift.

A method for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• moving a mobile drive, unit to a first point within a workspace, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• docking the mobile drive unit with the inventory holder;
• moving the mobile drive unit and the inventory holder to a second point within the workspace, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• and
• moving the inventory holder to a third point within the workspace using the conveyance equipment, wherein the conveyance equipment comprises an escalator and wherein moving the inventory holder to a third point comprises moving the inventory holder between a first floor and a second floor of a workspace using the escalator.

A method for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• moving a mobile drive unit to a first point within a workspace, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventor holder;
• docking the mobile drive unit with the inventory holder;
• moving the mobile drive unit and the inventory holder to a second point within the workspace, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• moving the inventory holder to a third point within the workspace using the conveyance equipment;
• wherein the first point comprises a first point within a first cell of a grid-based workspace that includes a plurality of cells, wherein the inventory holder is initially stored in the first cell;
• the second point comprises a second point within a second cell, wherein the second cell comprises one of a group of cells associated with the conveyance equipment;
• and
• moving the mobile drive unit and the inventory holder to the second point comprises:
• moving the mobile drive unit and the inventory holder to the second point;
• transmitting a reservation request to a management module, the reservation request identifying the second cell;
• and
• in response to receiving the reservation request, attempting, at the management module, to reserve all of the cells in the group of cells associated with the conveyance equipment.

A system for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• a plurality of inventory holders operable to store inventory items;
• and
• a plurality of mobile drive units, including a first mobile drive unit operable to:
• move to a first point, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• dock with the inventory holder;
• move the inventory holder to a second point, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• and
• conveyance, equipment operable to move the inventory holder to a third point;
• the first mobile drive unit is further operable to undo& from the conveyance equipment at the second point;
• the conveyance equipment is operable to move the undocked inventory holder to the third point;
• and
• a second mobile drive unit is operable to:
• dock with the inventory holder at the third point;
• and
• move the inventory holder to a fourth point.

A system for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• a plurality of inventory holders operable to store inventory items;
• a plurality of mobile drive units, including a first mobile drive unit operable to:
• move to a first point, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• dock with the inventory holder;
• and
• move the inventory holder to a second point, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• the conveyance equipment operable to move the inventory holder to a third point;
• a grid-based workspace. that includes a plurality of cells, and a management module operable to receive reservation requests and transmit reservation responses, and wherein:
• the first point comprises a first point within a first cell that initially stores the inventory holder;
• the second point comprises a second point within a second cell, wherein the second cell comprises one of a group of cells associated with the conveyance equipment,
• the mobile drive unit is further operable to transmit a reservation request to the management module, the reservation request identifying the second cell;
• the management module is operable, in response to receiving the reservation request from the mobile drive unit, attempt to reserve all of the cells in the group of cells associated with the conveyance equipment.

A system for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• a plurality of inventory holders operable to store inventory items;
• and
• a plurality of mobile drive units, including a first mobile drive unit operable to;
• move to a first point, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• dock with the inventory holder;
• move the inventory holder to a second point, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance;
• and
• conveyance equipment operable to move the inventory holder to a third point, wherein the conveyance equipment comprises a drive lift and wherein the drive lift is operable to move the inventory holder to the third point by moving the inventory holder between a first floor and a second floor of a workspace.

A system for transporting inventory items, comprising:

• a plurality of inventory holders operable to store inventory items;
• a plurality of mobile drive units, including a first mobile drive unit operable to:
• move to a first point, wherein the first point comprises a location of an inventory holder;
• dock with the inventory holder;
• and
• move the inventory holder to a second point, wherein the second point is associated with conveyance equipment;
• and
• the conveyance equipment operable to move the inventory holder to a third point, wherein the conveyance equipment comprises an escalator, and wherein the escalator is operable to move the inventory holder to the third point by moving the inventory holder between a first floor and a second floor of a workspace.
