Abstract
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center includes calculating in a computer an expected peak power draw for a plurality of computers. The expected peak power draw for the plurality of computers is less than a sum of individual expected peak power draws for each computer from the plurality of computers.
Claims24
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data that indicates power drawn by a first plurality of computers operating under a plurality of operating conditions;
- determining, with the computing system and based on the received data, a power draw of at least one computer operating under an operating condition that is different from at least a portion of the plurality of operating conditions, and the operating condition comprises an application being performed by the at least one computer;
- and
- calculating, with the computing system, an expected peak power draw for a second plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer,
- wherein the second plurality of computers operate under a plurality of different operating conditions that comprise a plurality of different applications being performed by the second plurality of computers.
A computer program product, tangibly embodied on a computer readable media, comprising instructions for causing a processor to:
- receive data that indicates power drawn by a first plurality of computers operating under a plurality of operating conditions;
- determine, based on the received data, a power draw of at least one computer operating under an operating condition that is different from at least a portion of the plurality of operating conditions, and the operating condition comprises an application being performed by the at least one computer;
- and
- calculate an expected peak power draw for a second plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer,
- wherein the second plurality of computers operate under a plurality of different operating conditions that comprise a plurality of different applications being performed by the second plurality of computers.
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data indicating utilization of a first plurality of computers, the data comprising a statistically significant sample of measured utilization of the first plurality of computers;
- determining, with the computing system, a power draw of at least one computer as a function of the utilization of the first plurality of computers, the utilization being a function of an operating condition that results from an application being performed by the at least one computer;
- calculating, with the computing system, an expected peak power draw for a plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer;
- and
- wherein the operating condition of the at least one computer of the first plurality of computers is a different operating condition than a plurality of operating conditions of at least a portion of the first plurality of computers, wherein the plurality of operating conditions correspond to a plurality of applications performed by the portion of the first plurality of computers that are different, at least in part, than the application being performed by the at least one computer.
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data that indicates utilization of a first plurality of computers, the data comprising a statistically significant sample of measured utilization of the first plurality of computers;
- determining, with the computing system, a power draw of at least one computer as a function of the utilization of the first plurality of computers;
- and
- determining, with the computing system, an expected peak power draw for a plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer and from the function of utilization for an expected peak utilization that comprises a utilization below which the plurality of computers spend at least 95% of their operational time.
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data that indicates utilization of a first plurality of computers, the data comprising a statistically significant sample of measured utilization of the first plurality of computers;
- determining, with the computing system, a power draw of at least one computer as a function of the utilization of the first plurality of computers;
- determining, with the computing system, an expected peak power draw for a plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer;
- storing, with the computing system, the received data;
- and
- using the calculated expected peak power draw for the plurality of computers to determine at least one of a size of a planned data center, a layout of a plurality of power distribution lines in the planned data center;
- and locations on the plurality of power distribution lines for a plurality of taps.
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data that indicates power drawn by a first plurality of computers operated under a plurality of operating conditions;
- determining, with the computing system and based on the received data, a power draw of at least one computer operating under an operating condition that is different from at least a portion of the plurality of operating conditions;
- and
- determining, with the computing system, an expected peak power draw for a second plurality of computers based on the determined power draw of the at least one computer,
- wherein the received data comprises one or more power distribution functions that represent the first plurality of computers, and wherein determining a power draw of the at least one computer comprises an extrapolation based on the power distribution functions from a baseline that represents the at least one computer.
A method for use in deploying computers into a data center, comprising:
- receiving, with a computing system, data that indicates power drawn by a first plurality of computers operated under a plurality of operating conditions;
- determining, with the computing system and based on the received data, a power draw of at least one computer operating under an operating condition that is different from at least a portion of the plurality of operating conditions;
