Abstract
In one embodiment, certain SRLGs associated with members of a bundle are deemed to be “risk-free SRLGs”, i.e., SRLGs whose failure may not substantially impact the capacity of the bundle to carry traffic in a computer network. In a bandwidth unaware embodiment a number of active members of the bundle is identified for each SRLG, and a bandwidth aware embodiment further specifies an available bandwidth capacity for each SRLG to determine risk-free SRLGs. A backup path or tunnel may be established and utilized to protect a communication link as long as the SRLGs shared are deemed to be risk-free SRLGs.

A method, comprising:
- receiving, at a network node comprising a processor, an advertisement having an association that indicates one or more shared risk link groups (SRLGs) associated with a bundle of member links in a computer network and one or more indicators indicating which SRLGs are risky;
- analyzing the received association to determine whether the bundle of member links and a communication link to be protected share at least one SRLG;
- determining whether the shared at least one SRLG is non-risky;
- and
- in response to determining that the shared at least one SRLG is non-risky, protecting the communication link with a backup tunnel that includes at least one member link of the bundle.
An apparatus, comprising:
- one or more network interfaces adapted to communicate data, including an advertisement, over a computer network;
- a processor coupled to the network interfaces and adapted to execute one or more processes;
- and
- a memory configured to store a process executable by the processor, the process when executed operable to:
- receive the advertisement having an association that indicates one or more shared risk link groups (SRLGs) associated with a bundle of member links in the computer network and one or more indicators indicating which SRLGs are risky,
- analyze the received association to determine whether the bundle of member links and a communication link share at least one SRLG,
- determine whether the shared at least one SRLG is non-risky, and
- protect the bundle of member links with a backup tunnel over the communication link, in response to the shared at least one SRLG being non-risky.
A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable media having software encoded thereon, the software when executed by a processor operable to:
- receive an advertisement having an association that indicates one or more shared risk link groups (SRLGs) associated with a bundle of member links in a computer network and one or more indicators indicating which SRLGs are risky;
- analyze the received association to determine whether the bundle of member links and a communication link to be protected share at least one SRLG;
- determine whether the shared at least one SRLG is non-risky;
- and
- protect the communication link with a backup tunnel that includes at least one member link of the bundle, in response to the shared at least one SRLG being non-risky.
