Abstract
The present invention provides methods and compositions for modulating cell senescence and cell proliferation using isoforms of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. The methods and compositions of the invention find use in inhibiting cancer cell growth or in generating populations of cells for tissue regeneration through the modulation of cell senescence and proliferation.
Claims8
A method of promoting senescence in a cell, the method comprising the step of contacting the cell with an agent that inhibits the function or expression of Δ133p53, but not wildtype p53 expression, thereby promoting cell senescence.
A method of inhibiting cancer cell growth by promoting cell senescence, the method comprising the step of contacting the cancer cell with an agent that inhibits the function or expression of Δ133p53, thereby inhibiting cancer cell growth.
A method of treating cancer by promoting cell senescence, the method comprising the step of contacting cancer cells with an agent that inhibits the function or expression of Δ133p53, but not wildtype p53 expression, thereby treating cancer.
