Abstract
A substrate transport apparatus having a frame, a drive section and an articulated arm. The drive section has at least one motor module that is selectable for placement in the drive section from a number of different interchangeable motor modules. Each having a different predetermined characteristic. The articulated arm has articulated joints. The arm is connected to the drive section for articulation. The arm has a selectable configuration selectable from a number of different arm configurations each having a predetermined configuration characteristic. The selection of the arm configuration is effected by selection of the at least one motor module for placement in the drive section.
Claims20
A substrate transport apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a drive section connected to the frame, the drive section including a shoulder drive section disposed in the frame and an articulated joint drive section;
- more than one different interchangeable motor module, each of which is capable of mounting in the articulated joint drive section and being configured so that it includes at least one motor, a selected motor module being selected for placement in the articulated joint drive section from the more than one different interchangeable motor module where each of the motor modules is selectable for placement in the articulated joint drive section and each motor module having a different number of motors each defining a respective independent drive axis independent of placement in the articulated joint drive section, wherein each of the motor modules is a unitary module that is installed and removed from the articulated joint drive section as a unit where the articulated joint drive section is configured to accept placement of only one unitary module at a time;
- and
- an articulated arm having a first arm configuration with a predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement, and a second arm configuration with a different predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement, the arm being connected to the drive section for articulation of at least one of the articulating joints, wherein the arm has a common shoulder joint and the configuration is selectable between the first and second arm configurations each having a different predetermined configuration of the number of articulating joints of the arm capable of being independently moved, the selection of the arm configuration being effected by selection of the at least one selected motor module for placement in the articulated joint drive section, the selected motor module determining each articulating joint capable of being independently moved dependent on the number of motors of the selected motor module upon installation of the selected motor module in the articulated joint drive section, wherein the articulated joint drive section is disposed in the articulated arm.
A substrate transport apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a drive section connected to the frame;
- and
- an articulated arm connected to the drive section for articulation of the arm, the arm having an upper arm link, a forearm link pivotally joined to the upper arm link and at least one end effector link pivotally joined to the forearm link, where the articulated arm has a first arm configuration with a predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement and a second arm configuration with a different predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement;
- wherein the drive section has a shoulder drive section portion disposed in the frame, an articulated joint drive section portion disposed in the articulated arm and more than one different interchangeable motor module, each of which is capable of mounting in the articulated joint drive section portion and being configured so that it includes at least one motor, a selected motor module being selected for connection to the articulated joint drive section portion where the at least one motor being for independently pivoting either the forearm relative to the upper arm or the at least one end effector relative to the forearm, and wherein the selected motor module is selectable for connection to the articulated joint drive section portion from the more than one different interchangeable motor module where each has a different number of motors each defining a respective independent drive axis independent of placement in the articulated joint drive section portion, each of the different interchangeable motor modules being a unitary module such that each of the interchangeable motor modules is installed and removed from the articulated joint drive section portion as a unit where the articulated joint drive section portion is configured to accept placement of only one unitary module, and
- wherein determining whether the forearm is independently pivoted relative to the upper arm or the at least one end effector is independently pivoted relative to the forearm for selection a respective one of the first and second arm configurations is dependent on the number of motors of the selected motor module upon installation of the selected motor module in the articulated joint drive section portion.
A substrate transport apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- an articulated arm section having a predetermined number of articulated joints including a common shoulder joint, the articulated arm section being connected to the frame at the common shoulder joint, the articulated arm section having a first arm configuration with a predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement and a second arm configuration with a different predetermined number of articulating joints of the arm capable of being independently moved;
- a drive section connected to the frame, the drive section including a shoulder drive section disposed in the frame and an articulated joint drive section disposed in the articulated arm;
- and
- a predetermined number of different interchangeable motor modules each being selectable for placement in the articulated joint drive section, each of the interchangeable motor modules being a unitary module such that each of the interchangeable motor modules is installed and removed from the articulated joint drive section as a unit, where the articulated joint drive section is configured to accept placement of only one of the unitary motor modules, each interchangeable motor module having a predetermined number of independent drive axes different from a number of independent drive axes of another one of the interchangeable motor modules, each interchangeable motor module being configured so that when placed in the articulated joint drive section each of the different interchangeable motor modules effects a selection of a corresponding one of the first and second arm configurations independent of placement of the interchangeable motor module in the articulated joint drive section depending on the number of independent drive axes of a selected one of the interchangeable motor modules upon installation of the selected interchangeable motor module in the articulated joint drive section.
A substrate transport apparatus comprising:
- a frame;
- a drive section connected to the frame, the drive section including a shoulder drive section disposed in the frame and an articulated joint drive section;
- more than one different interchangeable motor module, each of which is capable of mounting in the articulated joint drive section and being configured so that it includes at least one selected motor module selected for placement in the articulated joint drive section from the more than one different interchangeable motor module where each of the motor modules having a different predetermined number of drive axes defining drive axes of the articulated joint drive section, the at least one selected motor module being interchanged with another of the interchangeable motor modules having a different number of drive axes than the at least one selected motor module and effecting a change in the number of drive axes of rotation of the articulated joint drive section, where each of the interchangeable motor modules is a unitary module that is installed and removed from the articulated joint drive section as a unit;
- and
- an articulated arm having a first arm configuration with a predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement and a second arm configuration with a different predetermined number of articulating joints capable of independent movement, the arm being connected to the drive section for articulation of at least one of the articulating joints, wherein the arm has a selectable arm configuration selectable between the first and second arm configurations each having a different predetermined number of independent axes of rotation defined by a total number of drive axes of rotation of the articulated joint drive section, wherein the articulated joint drive section is disposed in the articulated arm.
