Abstract
A cutting insert rotated about its axis may be utilized during a metalworking operation and applied against the rotating workpiece to enhance tool performance. The cutting insert is secured within a toolholder having features to secure the insert but at the same time make for efficient removal of the insert from the toolholder.
Claims28
An assembly comprised of:
- a) a cutting insert having a central axis extending therethrough, wherein the insert is comprised of a body having:
- 1) a top surface and a bottom surface;
- 2) at least one side therebetween;
- and
- 3) a cutting edge at the intersection of the at least one side and the top surface;
- b) a toolholder upon which the cutting insert is mounted, wherein the toolholder is adapted to rotate the insert about the central axis at a predetermined rotational speed;
- c) wherein the insert has a frusto-conical portion mateable with a frustoconical bore within the toolholder;
- d) wherein the frusto-conical portion of the insert is the side;
- and
- e) wherein the bottom of the insert is adapted to abut against a floor within the bore of the toolholder.
7 more elements
A toolholder adapted to accept a cutting insert having a tapered shank and an abutment surface thereon, wherein the toolholder comprises:
- a) a toolholder body;
- b) a bore extending rearwardly therein and having a central axis extending therethrough, wherein the bore extends to a floor and wherein a hoop with a wall is defined from the floor forward of the bore for abutment with the abutment surface of the insert;
- and
- c) at least one radial passageway having a central radial axis approximately at the level of the floor, whereby the passageway extends completely through the hoop wall and further toward the centerline of the body.

An assembly comprised of:
- a) a cutting insert having a central axis extending therethrough, wherein the insert is comprised of a body having:
- 1) a top surface and a bottom surface;
- 2) at least one side therebetween, wherein the side has a frustoconical shape;
- and
- 3) a cutting edge at the intersection of the at least one side and the top surface;
- and
- b) a toolholder having:
- 1) a toolholder body with a forwardly facing end;
- 2) a bore extending rearwardly therein and having a central axis extending therethrough, wherein the bore extends to a floor and wherein a hoop with a wall is defined from the floor forward in the bore, and wherein the bore has a frusto-conical shape;
- 3) wherein the bore has a tapered section dimensioned to provide a resilient interference fit with the shank when the floor of the toolholder body is in abutment with the abutment surface of the insert;
- and
- c) at least one slot extending through the hoop wall to permit expansion of the hoop wall when the insert is positioned within the toolholder bore such that the insert bottom surface is in abutment with the floor of the toolholder.
