Method and system for allocating access to digital media content

A system for allocating an entitlement to a digital media content, the system comprising:

• a media server accessible over a communications network, the media server including a processor and a memory, the processor configured to:
• issue the entitlement including a transferable authorization to access the digital media content to a first person using a first device for accessing the media server over the communication network;
• store, in the memory, an entitlement record identified with the first person the entitlement record authorizing access to the digital media content by the first user;
• receive a communication including a data corresponding to the transferable authorization issued to the first person, wherein the data authorizes access to the digital media content requested by a second person using a second device for accessing the media server over the communication network, wherein the data corresponding to the transferable authorization neither includes a license key nor the digital media content;
• and
• update the entitlement record in the memory to authorize access to the digital media content requested by the second person.
