Transmitter voltage and receiver time margining

A method for determining margin associated with a receiver circuit of an integrated circuit comprising:

• periodically sampling a signal over a time period by the receiver circuit to generate a sampled version of the signal;
• incrementally varying a voltage swing associated with the signal, by a transmitter circuit on another integrated circuit coupled to the integrated circuit, the varying of the voltage swing being through a range of values of the voltage swing over the time period;
• and
• determining a margin value of the receiver circuit associated with the voltage swing based, at least in part, on the sampled version of the signal,
• wherein the voltage swing is varied over a range including at least approximately a maximum voltage swing and approximately 25% of the maximum voltage swing.

A receiver circuit of an integrated circuit, the receiver circuit comprising:

• a receiver sampling circuit configured to generate a sampled data signal based on an input signal and a sample clock signal;
• and
• a control circuit configured to generate phase change request signals based on a jitter injection signal and indicator signals indicating a phase difference between the input signal and a received clock signal, the phase change request signals incrementally varying phase alignment of the sample clock signal to the input signal through a range of values over a time period;
• and
• a circuit configured to generate the sample clock signal based on the received clock signal and phase change request signals.
