A liquid crystal material that has a phase system continuously showing an isotropic phase, a nematic phase, and a smectic ‘A’ phase in this order as temperature changes from a higher state to a lower state, and shows electroclinic effect in the smectic ‘A’ phase, wherein the smectic ‘A’ phase occurs at least in a temperature range from 20 degrees centigrade to 50 degrees centigrade, inclusive, wherein the liquid crystal material is selected from the group consisting of the liquid crystal materials in Formula 1-8, Formula 1-15, Formula 1-20, Formula 1-26, Formula 1-28, Formula 1-29, and Formula 1-34.
