Abstract
Techniques for reducing coloration artifacts visible in digital images acquired under flash lighting conditions are provided. The coloration artifact problem is addressed by capturing two images of the scene, a first image illuminated by a limited spectral bandwidth flash light source, and a second image illuminated by broad spectral bandwidth flash light source. Pixels of the second image are replaced with selected counterpart pixels from the first image that do not contain the coloration artifact.
Claims41
A method comprising:
- capturing a first image of a scene, the first image formed of a first plurality of pixels, the first plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy but that do not correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- capturing a second image of the scene, the second image formed of a second plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within the predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy including said portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- and
- correcting for a flash-induced coloration artifact in the second image by generating an output image in which only selected pixels of the second image are replaced with counterpart pixels from the first image.

An image capture apparatus comprising:
- an optical lens;
- a photo sensor;
- a controller, coupled to the photo sensor, to capture a first image of a scene, the first image formed of a first plurality of pixels, the first plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy but that do not correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- the controller further to capture a second image of the scene, the second image formed of a second plurality of pixels, the second plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within the predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy including said portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- and
- an image processor, coupled to the controller, to correct for a flash-induced coloration artifact in the second image by generating an output image in which only selected pixels of the second image are replaced with counterpart pixels from the first image.

An apparatus comprising:
- means for capturing a first image of a scene, the first image formed of a first plurality of pixels, the first plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy but that do not correspond to reflections of flash illumination within a portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- means for capturing a second image of the scene, the second image formed of a second plurality of pixels having values that correspond to reflections of flash illumination within the predetermined spectrum of electromagnetic energy including said portion of the predetermined spectrum;
- and
- means for correcting for a flash-induced coloration artifact in the second image by generating an output image in which only selected pixels of the second image are replaced with counterpart pixels from the first image.
