## Abstract

Modified animal erythropoietin polypeptides and uses thereof are provide.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treating a feline with anemia comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically-effective amount of a feline erythropoietin (fEPO) polypeptide comprising a non-naturally encoded amino acid substituted at position 1 of SEQ ID NO: 2, wherein the non-naturally encoded amino acid is para-acetylphenylalanine, and wherein the non-naturally encoded amino acid is linked to a water soluble polymer comprising a poly(ethylene) glycol moiety.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the anemia is non-regenerative anemia.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of between about 0.1 kDa and about 100 kDa.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of between about 0.1 kDa and about 50 kDa.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of about 20 kDa.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of about 30 kDa.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of about 40 kDa.

### Claim 8

A method of treating a feline patient having anemia comprising administering to said feline patient a therapeutically-effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising a feline erythropoietin (fEPO) polypeptide comprising a non-naturally encoded amino acid substituted at position 1 of SEQ ID NO: 2, wherein the non-naturally encoded amino acid is para-acetylphenylalanine, and wherein the non-naturally encoded amino acid is linked to a water soluble polymer comprising a poly(ethylene) glycol moiety, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of between about 0.1 kDa and about 50 kDa; and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the water soluble polymer has a molecular weight of about 20 kDa.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)
