Abstract
A signal corresponding to data read from an optical storage medium is equalized to generate an equalized signal. A signal level of the equalized signal is determined, and an expected signal level of the equalized signal without high frequency distortion is determined. A comparison between the signal level of the equalized signal and the expected signal level is performed, and an amplitude of the equalized signal is adjusted based on the comparison of the actual signal level of the equalized signal and the expected signal level. The equalized signal is decoded after adjusting the amplitude of the equalized signal.

- a multiplier, separate from the equalizer, to amplify the current equalized signal by an amount determined based on the comparison;
- and
- a decoder to decode the current equalized signal after amplification by the multiplier.
An apparatus, comprising:
- equalizer means for equalizing a signal corresponding to data read from an optical storage medium to generate a current equalized signal;
- signal estimator means for generating an estimated signal corresponding to the current equalized signal without high frequency distortion;
- first signal level detector means for detecting a level of the current equalized signal;
- second signal level detector means for detecting a level of the estimated signal;
- gain error detector means for generating a comparison of the level of the current equalized signal and the level of the estimated signal;
- multiplier means, separate from the equalizer means, for amplifying the current equalized signal by an amount determined based on the comparison;
- and
- decoder means for decoding the current equalized signal after amplification by the multiplier means.
