Abstract
A Globally Unique IDentifier (GUID) is used to match an authorization request with an authorization response for a transaction between a merchant and a consumer upon an account within a payment processing system where the payment amount is unknown until after the merchant receives the authorization response that includes the GUID. After receiving the authorization response and when the payment amount is known, the merchant forms a transmission that has information for delivery to an issuer of the account. This information is sufficient for the issuer to forward the payment amount from the account to pay the merchant for the transaction. While including the GUID and the payment amount, the information does not include an identifier of the account.
Claims20
A transaction handler comprising a processor and a non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable code capable of being executed by the processor to perform a method, the method comprising:
- receiving an authorization request having a code for a transaction between a consumer and a merchant in a plurality of merchants with an account that an issuer has issued to the consumer, wherein the code of the transaction is unique among the plurality of transaction of one merchant in the plurality of merchants, a quantity of funds for the transaction, and an account identifier of the account;
- deriving a Globally Unique Identifier (“GUID”), wherein each GUID in a plurality of GUIDs is derived without using a corresponding account identifier of the account;
- associating, with the transaction, the GUID, wherein the GUID is unique within the payment processing system such that the GUID associated with the transaction is unique among the plurality of GUIDs each associated with one transaction among the plurality of transactions conducted with the plurality of merchants;
- forming a first transmission to the issuer, wherein the first transmission includes the quantity of funds and the GUID, but does not include the account identifier;
- receiving an authorization response from the issuer, wherein the authorization response includes the GUID but does not include the account identifier;
- and
- forming a second transmission to the merchant, wherein the second transmission does not include the account identifier but includes the authorization response, the amount, the GUID, and the code for the transaction.
A method, using a processor, comprising:
- receiving an authorization request having a code for a transaction between a consumer and a merchant in a plurality of merchants with an account that an issuer has issued to the consumer, wherein the code of the transaction is unique among the plurality of transaction of one merchant in the plurality of merchants, a quantity of funds for the transaction, and an account identifier of the account;
- deriving a Globally Unique Identifier (“GUID”), wherein each GUID in a plurality of GUIDs is derived without using a corresponding account identifier of the account;
- associating, with the transaction, the GUID, wherein the GUID is unique within the payment processing system such that the GUID associated with the transaction is unique among the plurality of GUIDs each associated with one transaction among the plurality of transactions conducted with the plurality of merchants;
- forming a first transmission to the issuer, wherein the first transmission includes the quantity of funds and the GUID, but does not include the account identifier;
- receiving an authorization response from the issuer, wherein the authorization response includes the GUID but does not include the account identifier;
- and
- forming a second transmission to the merchant, wherein the second transmission does not include the account identifier but includes the authorization response, the amount, the
- GUID, and the code for the transaction.
