## Abstract

An interactive implantable medical device system includes an implantable medical device and a network-enabled external device capable of bi-directional communication and interaction with the implantable medical device. The external device is programmed to interact with other similarly-enabled devices. The system facilitates improved patient care by eliminating unnecessary geographic limitations on implantable medical device interrogation and programming, and by allowing patients, physicians, and other users to access medical records, history, and information and to receive status and care-related alerts and messages anywhere there is access to a communications network.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for using an interactive medical device system in a deferred mode, the method comprising the steps of:
identifying a data item to transmit from a source device to a destination device;
determining, in the source device, whether an action can be performed by the source device based on allowability rules related to the action;
awaiting a connection between the source device and the destination device;
if the connection is available, performing the action in the source device if the determination is that the source device can perform the action, transmitting the data item from the source device to the destination device, and transmitting a command to the destination device if the determination is that the source device cannot perform the action; and
if the connection is not available, performing a conditional action in the source device based on the allowability rules, and queuing the data item in the source device for later transmission.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method for using an interactive medical device system in a deferred mode of claim 1, wherein the source device comprises an implantable neurostimulator.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method for using an interactive medical device system in a deferred mode of claim 1, wherein the destination device comprises a database.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method for using an interactive medical device system in a deferred mode of claim 1, wherein the action comprises a commanded action based on a user input, and wherein the conditional action comprises at least a portion of the commanded action.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method for using an interactive medical device system in a deferred mode of claim 4, further comprising the step of receiving the data item from the user, wherein the data item comprises an authentication input from the user.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method for using an interactive implantable medical device system in a deferred mode of claim 1, wherein the action comprises storing a record of data in the source device, storing a record of data in one or more of the at least one designation devices, causing an alert to be transmitted to the patient from the source device, causing an alert to be transmitted to one or more of the at least one designation devices, initiating a data upload, initiating a software download, initiating a seizure log entry, initiating a note entry, initiating a message transmission, querying a data base, or carrying out a calculation in the source device or the destination device.
