## Abstract

In a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention, an automated, computerized method is provided for processing an image. According to a feature of the present invention, the method comprises the steps of providing an image file depicting an image, in a computer memory, determining log chromaticity representations for the image, clustering the log chromaticity representations to provide clusters of similar log chromaticity representations and identifying regions of uniform reflectance in the image as a function of the clusters of similar log chromaticity representations.

## Claims

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein the log chromaticity representations for the image are augmented with tone mapping intensity information.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8 wherein the tone mapping information is weighted.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein the log chromaticity representations for the image are augmented with x, y coordinate information.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10 wherein the x, y coordinate information is weighted.

### Claim 12

A computer system which comprises:
a CPU; and
a memory storing an image file containing an image;
the CPU arranged and configured to execute a routine to determine illumination invariant log chromaticity representations for the image, cluster the log chromaticity representations to provide clusters of similar log chromaticity representations and identify regions of uniform reflectance in the image as a function of the clusters of similar log chromaticity representations, the regions of uniform reflectance including illumination variation in the image across at least some of the regions of uniform reflectance.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The computer system of claim 12 wherein the CPU is further arranged and configured to execute a further routine to generate intrinsic images as a function of the regions of uniform reflectance in the image.

### Claim 14
