## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated PH1C98 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprise crossing maize variety PH1C98 with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into PH1C98 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. Hybrid maize seed, plant or plant part produced by crossing the variety PH1C98 or a locus conversion of PH1C98 with another maize variety.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A seed of inbred maize variety PH1C98, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-120278.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method of collecting molecular data comprising isolating nucleic acids from the seed of claim 1, analyzing said nucleic acids, and recording data based on the nucleic acids.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A plant, plant part, or cell produced by growing the seed of inbred maize variety of claim 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A method of collecting molecular data comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or cell of claim 3, analyzing said nucleic acids, and recording data based on the nucleic acids.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant or plant part of claim 3 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A maize plant produced by growing the maize seed of claim 5.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

A method for producing a second maize plant comprising applying plant breeding techniques to a first maize plant, or parts thereof, wherein said first maize plant is the maize plant of claim 6, and wherein application of said techniques results in the production of said second maize plant.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further defined as producing an inbred maize plant derived from the inbred maize variety PH1C98, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said first maize plant with itself or another maize plant to produce seed of a subsequent generation;
(b) harvesting and planting the seed of the subsequent generation to produce at least one plant of the subsequent generation; and
(c) repeating steps (a) and (b) for an additional 2-10 generations to produce an inbred maize plant derived from maize variety PH1C98.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The inbred maize plant derived from the inbred maize variety PH1C98 produced by the method of claim 8, wherein said inbred maize plant has all of the same phenotypic characteristics listed in Table 1 as inbred maize variety PH1C98 when grown in the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further defined as producing an inbred maize plant derived from maize variety PH1C98, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said first maize plant with an inducer variety to produce haploid seed; and
(b) doubling the haploid seed to produce an inbred maize plant derived from maize variety PH1C98.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The inbred maize plant derived from the inbred maize variety PH1C98 produced by the method of claim 10, wherein said inbred maize plant has all of the same phenotypic characteristics listed in Table 1 as inbred maize variety PH1C98 when grown in the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 12

A seed of inbred maize variety PH1C98, representative seed of said variety having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-120278, further comprising a locus conversion, wherein a plant grown from said seed comprises the locus and otherwise has essentially the same phenotypic characteristics of maize variety PH1C98 listed in Table 1 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The seed of claim 12, wherein the locus conversion confers a trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

A method of collecting molecular data comprising isolating nucleic acids from the seed of claim 12, analyzing said nucleic acids, and recording data based on the nucleic acids.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

A plant or plant part produced by growing the seed of the inbred maize variety PH1C98 of claim 12.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

A method of collecting molecular data comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or cell of claim 15, analyzing said nucleic acids, and recording data based on the nucleic acids.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant or plant part of claim 15 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

A maize plant produced by growing the seed of claim 17.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

A method for producing a second maize plant comprising applying plant breeding techniques to a first maize plant, or parts thereof, wherein said first maize plant is the maize plant of claim 18, and wherein application of said techniques results in the production of said second maize plant.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method of claim 19, further defined as producing an inbred maize plant, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said first maize plant with itself or another maize plant to produce seed of a subsequent generation;
(b) harvesting and planting the seed of the subsequent generation to produce at least one plant of the subsequent generation; and
(c) repeating steps (a) and (b) for an additional 2-10 generations to produce an inbred maize plant.

### Claim 21 (depends on 19)
