## Abstract

An upright surface treating appliance includes a main body having a user operable handle, and a stand moveable relative to the main body between a supporting position for supporting the main body in an upright position, and a retracted position. The stand includes at least one surface-engaging rolling member for allowing the appliance to be rolled along a surface using the handle when, with the stand in its supporting position, the main body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position. The appliance further includes a stand retaining mechanism for releasably retaining the stand in the supporting position and from which the stand is releasable upon application of a force to the main body. The stand retaining mechanism includes a system for increasing the force required to release the stand when the main body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position. This can reduce the risk of the stand being released accidentally from the supporting position when the main body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position and rolled along a surface.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An upright surface treating appliance comprising:
a main body comprising a user operable handle;
a stand, moveable relative to the main body between a supporting position for supporting the main body in an upright position, and a retracted position, the stand comprising at least one surface-engaging rolling member for allowing the appliance to be rolled along a surface using the handle when, with the stand in its supporting position, the main body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position; and
a stand retaining mechanism for releasably retaining the stand in the supporting position and from which the stand is releasable upon application of a force to the main body, the stand retaining mechanism comprising a system for increasing the force required to release the stand when the body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The appliance of claim 1, wherein the system for increasing the force required to release the stand is arranged to increase the force required to release the stand depending on the angle by which the body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The appliance of claim 1, wherein the system for increasing the force required to release the stand is arranged to increase the force required to release the stand when the body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position by an angle of at least 10°.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The appliance of claim 1, wherein the stand retaining mechanism comprises a locking member which is moveable relative to the main body from a first position to a second position to release the stand.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The appliance of claim 4, wherein the system for increasing the force required to release the stand comprises a moveable member which is moveable from a stowed position to a deployed position, in which it is located within a path along which the locking member moves from its first position to its second position, depending on the angle by which the body is reclined rearwardly from its upright position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The appliance of claim 5, wherein the moveable member is moveable between its stowed position and its deployed position under gravity.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The appliance of claim 6, wherein the moveable member comprises a rolling element.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

The appliance of claim 5, wherein the system for increasing the force required to release the stand comprises at least one resilient biasing member towards which the moveable member is urged by the locking member as the locking member moves to its second position when the moveable member is in its deployed position.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The appliance of claim 8, wherein said at least one resilient biasing member comprises a spring.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)

The appliance of claim 5, wherein the locking member comprises a fin having a curved surface for engaging the moveable member when the moveable member is in its deployed position.

### Claim 11 (depends on 5)

The appliance of claim 5, wherein the moveable member is moveable between its stowed and deployed positions along a track which, when the main body is in its upright position, is inclined so that the deployed position is located above the stowed position.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The appliance of claim 11, wherein the track is inclined by an angle of at least 20° to the horizontal when the main body is in its upright position.

### Claim 13 (depends on 4)

The appliance of claim 4, wherein the stand retaining mechanism comprises at least one biasing member for applying a force to the locking member which resists movement thereof from its first position.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The appliance of claim 13, wherein the at least one biasing member is arranged to apply a force to one end of the locking member.

### Claim 15 (depends on 4)

The appliance of claim 4, wherein the locking member is pivotably moveable between its first and second positions about a pivot axis.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The appliance of claim 15, wherein the pivot axis is located at or towards an end of the locking member.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The appliance of claim 1, wherein the stand retaining mechanism is carried by the main body.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The appliance of claim 17, wherein the stand retaining mechanism is located within a housing of the main body.

### Claim 19 (depends on 17)

The appliance of claim 17, wherein the main body comprises a casing housing a fan unit, and wherein the stand retaining mechanism is carried by the casing.
