Abstract
Systems and methods for detecting, installing and uninstalling a virtual machine monitor on a host device is provided. In general, in one aspect, a computer implemented method is provided. The computer implemented method includes initiating a user session on a host device, where the user session is initiated upon the insertion of a peripheral device into the host device. Additionally, a virtual machine monitor and a virtual machine are stored on the peripheral device and the virtual machine monitor is automatically installed on the host device. In some implementations, the virtual machine monitor is automatically uninstalled when the user session is terminated.
Claims31
A method, comprising:
- initiating a user session on a host device, the user session being initiated upon the insertion of a peripheral device into the host device, the peripheral device storing a virtual machine monitor and a virtual machine;
- and
- automatically installing the virtual machine monitor on the host device;
- the installed virtual machine monitor automatically executing the virtual machine;
- storing pending input/output (I/O) operations for the peripheral device on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been removed, terminating the user session, wherein the pending I/O operations continue to be stored on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been re-inserted within a time period of the peripheral device being removed, processing the stored I/O operations for the peripheral device;
- and
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has not been re-inserted within the time period, deleting the stored I/O operations.
A method, comprising:
- initiating a user session on a host device, the user session being initiated upon the insertion of a peripheral device into the host device, the peripheral device storing a virtual machine monitor and a virtual machine;
- automatically installing the virtual machine monitor on the host device;
- the installed virtual machine monitor automatically executing the virtual machine;
- storing pending input/output (I/O) operations for the peripheral device on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been removed, terminating the user session, wherein the pending I/O operations continue to be stored on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been re-inserted within a time period of the peripheral device being removed, processing the stored I/O operations for the peripheral device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has not been re-inserted within the time period, deleting the stored I/O operations;
- and
- in response to determining that the user session has been terminated and the time period has expired, automatically uninstalling the virtual machine monitor.
A system, comprising:
- an interface;
- a processor coupled to the interface and operable for running a native environment;
- a memory for storing instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:
- initiating a user session on a host device, the user session being initiated upon coupling a peripheral device with the interface, the peripheral device storing a virtual machine monitor and a virtual machine;
- automatically installing the virtual machine monitor on the host device;
- the installed virtual machine monitor automatically executing the virtual machine;
- storing pending input/output (I/O) operations for the peripheral device on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been removed, terminating the user session, wherein the pending I/O operations continue to be stored on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been re-inserted within a time period of the peripheral device being removed, processing the stored I/O operations for the peripheral device;
- and
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has not been re-inserted within the time period, deleting the stored I/O operations.

- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been removed, terminating the user session, wherein the pending I/O operations continue to be stored on the host device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has been re-inserted within a time period of the peripheral device being removed, processing the stored I/O operations for the peripheral device;
- in response to detecting that the peripheral device has not been re-inserted within the time period, deleting the stored I/O operations;
- and
- in response to determining that the user session has been terminated and the time period has expired, automatically uninstalling the virtual machine monitor.
A computer-program product tangibly embodied on a non-transitory computer-readable medium for storing instructions, which when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:
- initiating a user session on a host device, the user session being initiated upon the insertion of a peripheral device into the host device, the peripheral device storing a virtual machine monitor and a virtual machine;
- automatically installing the virtual machine monitor on the host device;
- the installed virtual machine monitor automatically executing the virtual machine;
