Wireless video communication

A method of managing revocation when an alternate transmission, with alternate transmitter and receiver identities that use an alternate transmission method, is partly juxtaposed on an original transmission system, with either one of an original transmitter and receiver identity that use an original transmission method, comprising:

• at an alternate transmission receiver (ATR), providing a digital certificate, the digital certificate containing information cryptographically binding the ATR identity to an original transmission (OT) identity by hashing the ATR identity with the OT re-transmitter identity which can be used for revocation purposes;
• at the ATR, responsive to an initiation of a communication session from the alternate transmission transmitter (ATT), sending the digital certificate to the ATT using the alternate transmission method;
• at the ATT, performing one of the following:
• directly checking to see if the OT identity or ATR identity is in a revocation list, extracting the original transmission identity from the certificate and sending it to an original transmission transmitter (OTT) using the original transmission method for checking in the revocation list, sending the digital certificate to a controlling authority to check identities in the revocation list;
• and
• when the OT identity or ATR identity is found to be in the revocation list, preventing content from being sent either from the ATT or OTT.

A method of carrying out an alternate transmission, comprising:

• at an alternate transmission transmitter (ATT) device, receiving an alternate transmission of a digital certificate from an alternate transmission receiver (ATR), the digital certificate containing information cryptographically binding an original transmission (OT) identity suitable for revocation with a device identifier for the ATR, a device public key and a digital signature;
• where the OT identity is cryptographically bound with the device identifier for the ATR by hashing the OT identifier with the device identifier for the ATR;
• the ATT receiving the digital certificate, extracting the original transmission identity suitable for revocation, and sending this to a source device using original transmission means for checking in a revocation list;
• and
• when the original transmission identity is found to be revoked, the source device preventing transmission of copy protected content using the original transmission.

An alternate transmission receiver (ATR) for receiving copy protected content from an associated alternate transmission transmitter (ATT) using an alternate transmission system and then adapting it to an original transmission system comprising:

• a storage device;
• a digital certificate stored on the storage device, comprising:
• an identity for the alternate transmission system;
• an identity for the original transmission system;
• a digital signature containing information cryptographically binding the identity for the alternate transmission system and the identity for the original transmission system by hashing the identity for the alternate transmission system with the identity for the original transmission system;
• and
• a transmitter configured to transmit the digital certificate to the ATT using an alternate transmission method for the purpose of authenticating the ATR and providing for revocation.

A method, comprising:

• at an alternate-transmission transmitter (ATT) that operates within an original transmission system via an alternate transmission method to provide communication capabilities relative to an original-transmission transmitter (OTT) that operates via an original transmission method:
• receiving, from an alternate-transmission receiver (ATR) via the alternate transmission method, a digital certificate containing information that cryptographically binds an alternate receiver identity of the ATR to an original-transmission re-transmitter identity of an original-transmission re-transmitter of the ATR, where the alternate receiver identity to the ATR is cryptographically bound to the original-transmission re-transmitter identity of the original-transmission re-transmitter of the ATR by hashing, and where the original-transmission re-transmitter identity is used within the original transmission system to manage revocation of the alternate receiver identity of the ATR;
• extracting the original-transmission re-transmitter identity from the digital certificate;
• and
• sending the extracted original-transmission re-transmitter identity to the OTT using the original transmission method, where revocation of the original-transmission re-transmitter identity within a revocation list accessible to the OTT operates to revoke the alternate receiver identity of the ATR.
