Unscheduled protocols for switched antenna arrays

Logic encoded in a non-transitory computer readable medium for execution by a processor and when executed operable to:

• receive a signal asserted by a first wireless transceiver coupled to a first directional antenna indicating the wireless transceiver is communicating with another wireless device;
• and
• prevent a second wireless transceiver coupled to a second directional antenna from transmitting while the first wireless transceiver is asserting the signal;
• wherein the first wireless transceiver and second wireless transceiver can concurrently receive wireless signals that are spatially separated.

A method, comprising:

• coupling, from an antenna array comprising an omni-directional antenna and at least one narrow-beam sector antenna, the omni-directional antenna to a wireless transceiver to receive a reservation frame from a peer wireless transceiver while the at least one directional antenna is idle;
• determining a directional antenna selected from the at least one directional antenna to employ to communicate with the peer wireless transceiver;
• and
• sending a poll frame to the peer wireless transceiver to initiate communications with the peer wireless transceiver.
