Abstract
A method for coherent estimation of the traffic-to-pilot energy ratio is presented. A received preamble is decoded, and then re-encoded. The received preamble is then multiplied by the re-encoded preamble. The results are summed, squared, and then divided by a pilot energy value. In another method, a message carrying energy information can be inserted between a subpacket preamble and a subpacket.

A method comprising:
- decoding first preamble symbols received at a base station to generate decoded first preamble symbols;
- encoding the decoded first preamble symbols to generate second preamble symbols;
- determining an energy value associated with a transmission between the base station and a remote station, wherein the energy value is determined based at least in part on a sequence of symbols generated by a multiplication of the first preamble symbols and the second preamble symbols;
- forming a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- transmitting the message in a channel to the remote station.
An apparatus comprising:
- means for receiving first preamble symbols at a first station;
- means for decoding the first preamble symbols to generate decoded first preamble symbols;
- means for encoding the decoded first preamble symbols to generate second preamble symbols;
- means for determining an energy value associated with a transmission between the first station and a second station, wherein the energy value is determined based at least in part on a multiplication of the first preamble symbols and the second preamble symbols;
- means for forming a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- means for transmitting the message in a channel to the second station.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium encoded with computer-readable instructions thereon that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:
- decode first preamble symbols received at a first station to generate decoded first preamble symbols;
- encode the decoded first preamble symbols to generate second preamble symbols;
- determine an energy value associated with a transmission between the first station and a second station, wherein the energy value is determined based at least in part on a multiplication of the first preamble symbols and the second preamble symbols;
- form a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- transmit the message in a channel to the second station.
A method comprising:
- decoding a first preamble received at a remote station to generate a decoded first preamble;
- encoding the decoded first preamble to generate a second preamble;
- generating a sequence of symbols based at least in part on a multiplication of the first preamble and the second preamble;
- calculating an energy value associated with a transmission between the remote station and a base station, wherein the energy value is calculated based at least in part on the sequence of symbols;
- forming a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- transmitting the message to the base station.
A base station comprising:
- a decoder configured to decode first preamble symbols to generate decoded first preamble symbols;
- an encoder configured to encode the decoded first preamble symbols to generate second preamble symbols;
- a transmission power control unit configured to:
- generate a sequence of symbols based at least in part on a multiplication of the first preamble symbols and the second preamble symbols;
- and
- determine an energy value associated with a transmission to a first station, wherein the energy value is determined based at least in part on the sequence of symbols;
- a channel element coupled to the transmission power control unit for forming a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- a transmitter adapted to transmit the message to the first station.
A remote station comprising:
- a decoder configured to decode a first preamble to generate a decoded first preamble;
- an encoder configured to encode the decoded first preamble to generate a second preamble;
- a transmission power control unit for determining an energy value associated with a transmission to a base station, wherein the energy value is determined based at least in part on a multiplication of the first preamble and the second preamble;
- a channel element coupled to the transmission power control unit for forming a message including an indicator associated with the energy value;
- and
- a transmitter adapted to transmit the message to the base station.
