Abstract
A novel gene encoding P. pastoris orotate-phosphoribosyl transferase (URA5) is disclosed. Methods for producing and selecting yeast strains capable of stable genetic integration of heterologous sequences into the host genome are also provided.

An isolated polypeptide comprising or consisting of a polypeptide sequence selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) SEQ ID NO:3;
- and
- (b) a polypeptide sequence at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO:3,
- wherein the polypeptide has orotate-phosphoribosyl transferase activity.
