Abstract
In one aspect, a method includes determining locations in a file that have changed using read signature commands, reading data around a changed file location for each file location that has changed, generating variable-size portions of the data read and sending the variable-size portions of the data to a backup system.

A method comprising:
- determining locations in a file that have changed using read signature commands, a read signature command being configured to read a signature associated with a set of data, the signature being unique to the set of data and generated using a cryptographic algorithm, the read signature command comprising parameters comprising a logical block address for a target of the read, a number of blocks of an I/O request and a granularity of the signature;
- reading data around a changed file location for each file location that has changed using a computer central processor;
- generating variable-size portions of the data read;
- and
- sending the variable-size portions of the data to a backup system.

- a non-transitory machine-readable medium that stores executable instructions, the instructions causing a machine to:
