Superimposed displays

A display comprising:

• a) a first display subunit comprising a first plurality of light modulating elements, each light modulating element of said first plurality located on a substrate and designed to modulate light in a respective characteristic pattern;
• b) a second display subunit comprising a second plurality of light modulating elements, each light modulating element of said second plurality located on the substrate and designed to modulate light in a respective characteristic pattern;
• c) an optical system configured to optically superimpose each light modulating element of said first plurality with a corresponding light modulating element of said second plurality designed to modulate light in a like characteristic pattern;
• and
• d) electronic circuitry configured to control operation of light modulating elements in said first display subunit to compensate for defective light modulating elements in said second display subunit.

A method of improving display performance, comprising:

• a) optically superimposing first and second display subunits each having light emitting elements located on a same substrate to form a superimposed display area, wherein each light emitting element of said first display subunit is designed to emit light of a characteristic wavelength band and is superimposed with a light emitting element of said second display subunit designed to emit light of the same wavelength band;
• b) detecting the presence of at least one malfunctioning light emitting element in said first display subunit within said superimposed display area, said malfunctioning light emitting element functioning in a manner deviating from an expected operation;
• and
• c) if said malfunctioning light emitting element in said first display subunit is superimposed on a functioning light emitting element in said second display subunit, controlling the operation of said functioning light emitting element to at least partially compensate for said malfunctioning light emitting element.

A method of configuring a display comprised of superimposed first and second display subunits, comprising:

• a) producing a test illumination pattern on the first display subunit, the first display subunit formed on a substrate;
• b) detecting defects in said test illumination pattern;
• and
• c) configuring the second display subunit to produce an illumination pattern sufficient to compensate at least in part for defects in said test illumination pattern, the second display subunit formed on the substrate and at least partially optically superimposed with the first display subunit.
