Abstract
The present application features methods and compositions for treating patients suffering from atherosclerosis or at risk for developing atherosclerosis. The treatment includes administering to the patient a pharmaceutical composition that includes an agent capable of blocking the interaction between uPA and its receptor uPAR, e.g., an ATF or a fragment thereof, an anti-uPA antibody, a uPAR or a fragment thereof, or an antibody that specifically binds to uPAR.
Claims11
A method of treating atherosclerosis, the method comprising administering to a patient suffering from or at risk for atherosclerosis a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising an amino terminal fragment (ATF) polypeptide, wherein the ATF polypeptide consists of 157 amino acids or less with an amino acid sequence that is at least 90% identical to SEQ ID NO:1 and is capable of either binding to a urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) or inducing an anti-ATF immune response in the patient, thereby treating atherosclerosis.
