A method for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, the method comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of 4-[2-(4-methylphenylsulfanyl)phenyl]piperidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof (compound I) to a patient in need thereof.
