Abstract
A method for cutting surgical rod in situ is provided. The method includes positioning an operable end of a surgical rod scorer around surgical rod that has been previously affixed to a spinal segment via at least two pedicle screws. A portion of the surgical rod is scored with the surgical rod scorer. The scored surgical rod is grasped with a surgical rod bender. And, the scored surgical rod is bent such that the surgical rod separates along the scored portion of the surgical rod.
Claims20
A method for cutting a surgical rod in situ, comprising:
- positioning an operable end of a surgical rod scorer around a surgical rod that has been previously affixed to a spinal segment via at least two bone anchors;
- scoring a portion of the surgical rod with the surgical rod scorer;
- grasping the scored surgical rod with a surgical rod bender such that grasping portions of the surgical rod bender are positioned on opposite sides of the scored portion;
- removing the operable end from around the surgical rod;
- and
- bending the scored surgical rod such that the surgical rod separates along the scored portion of the surgical rod.
A method for cutting a surgical rod in situ, comprising:
- positioning an operable end of a surgical rod scorer around a surgical rod that has been previously affixed to a spinal segment via at least two bone anchors, the surgical rod scorer including a plurality of cutting elements operably disposed thereon, at least one of the plurality of cutting elements translatable along a center-line of the surgical rod scorer from a retracted position, to an extended position for scoring the surgical rod;
- approximating a reciprocating member of the surgical rod scorer until the plurality of cutting elements contact the surgical rod;
- scoring a portion of the surgical rod with the surgical rod scorer by oscillating the surgical rod scorer about the surgical rod back and forth through approximately 60 degrees of an arc;
- grasping the scored surgical rod with a surgical rod bender such that grasping portions of the surgical rod bender are positioned on opposite sides of the scored portion;
- and
- bending the scored surgical rod such that the surgical rod separates along the scored portion of the surgical rod.
