Method of and circuit for determining a shift pattern to generate an output data stream

A method of determining a shift pattern for generating an output data stream comprising output data words having a data width N from input data words having a data width M, where N is not equal to M, the method comprising:

• receiving an input data stream comprising words having the data width M;
• determining a value of (y*M)−N, where y is the ceiling of N/M;
• determining an initial shift value of the shift pattern using the determined value of (y*M)−N;
• generating subsequent shift values of the shift pattern, wherein each subsequent shift value is based upon an immediate previous shift value of the shift pattern, the data width N, and the data width M, including generating a new shift value of the subsequent shift values, if M is greater than or equal to N, equal to an old shift value plus (M−N) if the old shift value is less than M, otherwise generating the new shift value equal to the old shift value minus N, and generating the new shift value of the subsequent shift values, if M is less than N, equal to the old shift value plus (M−N) if the old shift value is greater than or equal to zero, otherwise generating the new shift value equal to an old shift value plus M;
• and
• transforming the input data stream to the output data stream by shifting input data words of the input data stream according to the shift pattern.

A circuit for determining a shift pattern for generating an output data stream comprising output data words having a data width N from input data words having a data width M, where N is not equal to M, the circuit comprising:

• a data width conversion circuit configured to receive an input data stream comprising words having the data width M, the data width conversion circuit comprising a first pipeline stage coupled to receive a first input word having the data width M and a second pipeline stage coupled to the first pipeline stage, the second pipeline stage receiving the first input word having the data width M when a second input word having the data width M is received at the first pipeline stage;
• a control circuit, coupled to the data width conversion circuit, configured to determine a value of (y*M)−N, where y is the ceiling of N/M, and to determine an initial shift value of the shift pattern using the determined value of (y*M)−N;
• wherein the control circuit generates subsequent shift values, wherein each subsequent shift value is based upon an immediate previous shift value, the data width N, and the data width M, and the subsequent shift values of the shift pattern are generated until the determined initial shift value is generated, and wherein the shift pattern includes the determined initial shift value followed by subsequent shift values generated before the value of the determined initial shift value is generated;
• and
• a shift circuit coupled to the control circuit and configured to transform the input data stream to the output data stream by shifting input data words of the input data stream according to the shift pattern.
