Automatic detection of wireless network type

A method comprising:

• executing at least a portion of an authentication sequence for connecting to a wireless network;
• monitoring for at least one failure associated with said executing;
• in an event that the at least one failure occurs, ascertaining that the wireless network requests a user entry of an encryption key;
• or
• in an event that the at least one failure does not occur:
• identifying the wireless network as a wireless provisioning services (WPS) network if expected authentication information of the authentication sequence is received within a predetermined threshold period of time;
• or
• identifying the wireless network as an 802.1x network if the expected authentication information of the authentication sequence is not received within the predetermined threshold period of time.

One or more computer-readable storage devices storing computer-executable instructions that are executable by a computing device to cause to computer device to perform operations comprising:

• executing at least a portion of an authentication sequence for connecting to a wireless network;
• monitoring for at least one failure associated with said executing;
• in an event that the at least one failure occurs, ascertaining that the wireless network requests a user entry of an encryption key;
• or
• in an event that the at least one failure does not occur:
• identifying the wireless network as a wireless provisioning services (WPS) network if expected authentication information of the authentication sequence is received within a predetermined threshold period of time;
• or
• identifying the wireless network as an 802.1x network if the expected authentication information of the authentication sequence is not received within the predetermined threshold period of time.
