Abstract
A quaternary ammonium salt detergent made from the reaction product of the reaction of: (a) a hydrocarbyl substituted acylating agent and a compound having an oxygen or nitrogen atom capable of condensing with said acylating agent and further having a tertiary amino group; and (b) a quaternizing agent suitable for converting the tertiary amino group to a quaternary nitrogen and the use of such quaternary ammonium salt detergents in a lubricating composition, a fuel composition.
Claims5
A composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a quaternary ammonium salt which comprises the reaction product of:
- a. the reaction of a hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent and a compound having an oxygen or nitrogen atom capable of condensing with said acylating agent and further having a tertiary amino group represented by at least one of formula VII and VIII
- wherein X is an alkylene group containing about 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, R2 R3 and R4 are H or an alkylene group of 1 to 2 carbon atoms;
- and
- b. quaternizing agent suitable for converting the tertiary amino group to a quaternary nitrogen
- wherein the quaternizing agent comprises a hydrocarbyl epoxide in combination with an acid.
