## Abstract

This invention relates to electroluminescent benzofluorenes that are useful in electroluminescent applications. It also relates to electronic devices in which the active layer includes such a benzofluorene composition.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A composition compound of Formula I:
wherein each of R1, R2, and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, diarylamino, dialkylamino, aryl(alkyl)amino, arylthio, alkylthio, arylseleno, alkylseleno, aryloxy, alkoxy, dialkylphosphino, diarylphosphino, dialkylphosphoryl, diarylphosphoryl, and thiophosphoryl.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition compound of claim 1, wherein R1 is the same or different at each occurrence and is an alkyl group, and R2 and R3 are hydrogen.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition compound of claim 1, wherein R1 is the same or different at each occurrence and is an alkyl group, at least one R2 is selected from the group consisting of fluoro, alkyl, and fluoroalkyl, and R3 is hydrogen.

### Claim 4

An organic electronic device comprising: a. a first electrical contact layer;
b. a layer comprising a composition compound of Formula I:
wherein each of R1, R2, and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, diarylamino, dialkylamino, aryl(alkyl)amino, arylthio, alkylthio, arylseleno, alkylseleno, aryloxy, alkoxy, dialkylphosphino, diarylphosphino, dialkylphosphoryl, diarylphosphoryl, and thiophosphoryl; and
c. a second electrical contact layer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The device of claim 4, wherein R1 is the same or different at each occurrence and is an alkyl group, and R2 and R3 are hydrogen.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The device of claim 4, wherein R1 is the same or different at each occurrence and is an alkyl group, at least one R2 is selected from the group consisting of fluoro, alkyl, and fluoroalkyl, and R3 is hydrogen.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The device of claim 4, wherein the layer comprising a composition compound of Formula I is an active layer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The device of claim 7, wherein the active layer is a photoactive layer.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8, wherein the compound is a dopant.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The device of claim 8, wherein the compound is a host.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The compound of claim 1 which, when formed into a film by vacuum deposition, is capable of emitting blue light.

### Claim 12 (depends on 4)

The device of claim 4 wherein the layer comprising the compound of Formula I is capable of emitting blue light.
