Abstract
An air cooling system, method, apparatus and kit applied to lower transformer operating temperatures, such as governed by a tank or container of oil, allowing transformer components to run more efficiently at a lower temperature level, e.g., down from the hot level operating temperatures typical in stressed conventional devices. By lowering the operational levels to within or below the nominal operational temperature ranges for the equipment, and recovering heat generated during operation, several advantages are obtained.
Claims20
A transformer cooling system comprising:
- a transformer;
- a housing containing said transformer, said housing containing a coolant therein for cooling said transformer;
- at least one radiator, said at least one radiator externally attached to said housing, said at least one radiator receiving heated coolant from said housing and returning cooled coolant to said housing;
- a cooling chamber, said cooling chamber encasing therein said at least one radiator;
- input port means in said cooling chamber for inputting a cooled gas into said cooling chamber, said cooled gas circulating along surfaces of said at least one radiator;
- output port means in said cooling chamber for outputting hot gas from said cooling chamber;
- and
- regulator means for regulating said input port means, cooled gas circulation and said output port means,
- whereby said transformer is cooled.
A method for cooling a transformer system comprising:
- encasing a portion of a transformer system within a cooling chamber, said transformer system containing a transformer, a transformer housing and at least one radiator externally attached to said transformer housing, said portion comprising said at least one radiator,
- inserting cooled air via an input port means into said cooling chamber, said cooled air circulating along surfaces of said at least one radiator;
- removing warmed air via an output port means from within the cooling chamber;
- and
- regulating via a regulator means said input port means, cooled air circulation and said output port means,
- thereby cooling the transformer.
A kit for modifying transformer systems, said kit comprising:
- encasement means for encasing a portion of a transformer system within a cooling chamber, said transformer system containing a transformer, a transformer housing and at least one radiator externally attached to said transformer housing, said portion comprising said at least one radiator;
- connection means for connecting a cool air source to said cooling chamber via an input port means, and removing warm air from said cooling chamber via an output port means;
- distribution means for distributing cool air within said cooling chamber to said at least one radiator, said cool air circulating along surfaces of said at least one radiator;
- and
- control means for controlling said input port means, output port means, cool air source and said distribution means.
A cooling chamber for a transformer system comprising:
- encasement means for encasing a portion of said transformer system within said cooling chamber, said transformer system containing a transformer, a transformer housing and at least one radiator externally attached to said transformer housing, said portion comprising said at least one radiator therein;
- connection means for connecting a cool air source to said cooling chamber via an input port means, and removing warm air from said cooling chamber via an output port means;
- distribution means for distributing cool air within said cooling chamber to said at least one radiator, said cool air circulating along surfaces of said at least one radiator within said cooling chamber;
- and
- control means for controlling said input port means, output port means, cool air source and said distribution means.
