System and method for using pilot signals in non-volatile memory devices

A memory system, comprising:

• a memory including a plurality of cells;
• wherein, to perform a writing operation to store user data among the plurality of cells of the memory, the memory system further comprises:
• a pilot generator module configured to randomly alternate between selection of i) a first scheme by which pilot data is to be stored, along with the user data, among the plurality of cells of the memory and ii) a second scheme by which the pilot data is to be stored, along with the user data, among the plurality of cells of the memory, wherein the pilot data comprises a known predetermined sequence;
• a multiplexer module configured to combine the pilot data and the user data in accordance with the selection of the first scheme and the second scheme;
• and
• a write module configured to write the pilot data and the user data, as combined by the multiplexer module, among the plurality of cells of the memory.
