Abstract
A method and apparatus is provided for detecting the start of a secure mode by a user terminal (12) without explicit signaling. After the network (30) commands the user terminal to switch to secure mode and receives a data packet from the user terminal, the receiving network node (22) determines the security mode of the user terminal by determining whether valid security has been applied to the received data packet by the user terminal.
Claims28
A method of processing received data packets where the security state of the transmitting terminal is not known, said method comprising:
- transmitting a secure mode command to a user terminal;
- receiving a plurality of data packets from the user terminal following the transmission of the secure mode command;
- determining a security mode of the user terminal by determining whether a received data packet has valid security;
- processing the received data packet as a secure packet if the received data packet has valid security;
- processing the received data packet as an insecure packet if the received data packet lack valid security;
- and
- determining that a security failure has occurred based on lack of valid security for a predetermined number of consecutive data packets.
A base station comprising:
- a transceiver for sending data to and receiving data from a user terminal;
- a processor operatively connected to said transceiver and configured to:
- receive a plurality of data packets from the user terminal following transmission of a secure mode command;
- determine a security mode of the user terminal by determining whether a received data packet has valid security;
- and
- determine the occurrence of a security failure based on lack of valid security for a predetermined number of consecutive received data packets.
