Abstract
A paper sorting system allows the high speed determination of the presence of printed matter for individual sheets of paper in a stream of waste paper. Sorting criteria may be selected by a user from a plurality of predefined options to sort the paper stream. The selected category of paper to be sorted may include newspaper or magazines.
Claims12
A method of sorting paper, comprising:
- (a) selecting, via human user input to a human interface system, from a plurality of pre-defined options for sorting of pre-defined categories of paper, a category of paper containing printed matter to be sorted from other paper being conveyed through an inspection zone;
- (b) moving the paper through the inspection zone;
- (c) transmitting light onto the paper in the inspection zone;
- (d) collecting the light reflected from the paper;
- and
- (e) automatically sorting multiple items of the selected category of paper from the other paper without further human user input, said sorting being based at least in part on detection from the light collected in step (d) of a characteristic indicative of the presence of printed matter on the paper.

A method of sorting paper, comprising:
- (a) moving the paper through an inspection zone;
- (b) transmitting light onto the paper in the inspection zone;
- (c) collecting light reflected from the paper;
- (d) based upon the collected light of step (c), automatically determining without human intervention whether the paper is newspaper, said determining being based at least in part on detection of a characteristic indicative of the presence of printed matter on the newspaper;
- and
- (e) sorting the newspaper from other paper.

- and
- (e) sorting the magazines from other paper.
