Abstract
Surgical systems, devices and methods including one or more tissue stimulation elements that, in some instances, may also be used for sensing purposes. Some of the surgical devices also include a tissue coagulation element.
Claims14
A surgical apparatus, comprising:
- a clamp including a first clamp member, a second clamp member, and movement apparatus that moves at least one of the first and second clamp members relative to the other of the first and second clamp members such that the surgical apparatus is operable between a first state defined by a first spacing between the first and second clamp members and a second state defined by a second spacing between the first and second clamp members, the first spacing being different from the second spacing;
- an electrosurgical power supply and control apparatus;
- a tissue stimulation apparatus configured to provide pulses of tissue stimulation energy varying in amplitude over a range of 1 mA to 20 mA;
- a coagulation electrode assembly carried by the clamp, and coupleable with the electrosurgical power supply and control apparatus;
- and
- a stimulation electrode assembly carried by the clamp, and coupleable with the tissue stimulation apparatus.

- a stimulation electrode assembly carried by the clamp and comprising a first stimulation electrode;
- and
- a tissue stimulation apparatus coupleable with the stimulation electrode assembly, and configured to provide pulses of tissue stimulation energy varying over a range between a first amplitude and a second amplitude,
- wherein the first amplitude is sufficient to stimulate viable heart tissue that is no more than about 2.8 mm from the stimulation electrode when in contact with the heart tissue, and wherein the second amplitude is sufficient to stimulate viable heart tissue that is no more than about 13.0 mm from the stimulation electrode when contacting the heart tissue.
