Abstract
A coring tool for use in a borehole formed in a subterranean formation includes a tool housing with a coring aperture and a core receptacle. A coring bit is mounted within the tool housing and movable between retracted and extended positions by a series of pivotably connected extension link arms. Another set of link arms rotates the coring bit between coring and eject positions. The coring tool may also include a multi-column core storage magazine with shifters to move cores or core holders between columns. The coring tool may be used to measure core lengths during operation and facilitates retrieval of cores having larger lengths and diameters than conventional sidewall coring tools.
Claims21
An apparatus, comprising:
- a coring tool for conveyance within a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the coring tool comprises:
- a coring assembly disposed within a tool housing and comprising:
- a bit housing rotatably coupled to the tool housing;
- a coring bit assembly disposed in the bit housing and comprising a coring bit;
- and
- a rotation piston configured to rotate the bit housing between eject and coring positions;
- a storage area disposed within the tool housing and comprising a core receptacle having storage columns that receive core holders holding core samples;
- and
- a shifter coupled to the core receptacle and configured to more the core holders between the storage columns.
A method, comprising:
- conveying a coring tool within a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the coring tool comprises:
- a coring assembly disposed within a tool housing and comprising:
- a bit housing rotatably coupled to the tool housing;
- a coring bit assembly disposed in the bit housing and comprising a coring bit;
- and
- a rotation piston configured to rotate the hit housing between eject and coring positions;
- and
- a storage area disposed within the tool housing:
- and comprising a core receptacle having first and second storage columns that receive core holders holding core samples;
- registering one of the core holders with the coring bit;
- capturing a core in the registered core holder;
- and
- transporting the core into the first storage column.
A method, comprising:
- conveying a coring tool within a borehole formed in a subterranean formation;
- extending a handling piston to a first position in which the handling piston engages a first core holder;
- measuring a first distance corresponding to the first position of the handling piston;
- capturing, a core sample from the subterranean formation:
- extending the handling piston to a second position, thereby advancing the core;
- measuring a second distance corresponding to the second position of the handling piston;
- determining a length of the core from the first and second distances;
- and
- displaying the core length.
