Abstract
Systems and methods for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter downstream of an engine coupled to an energy conversion device are provided herein. One exemplary method includes, during first engine shutdown conditions, increasing excess oxygen to the particulate filter by spinning the engine with the energy conversion device, and regenerating the particulate filter. The method also includes, during second engine shutdown conditions, decreasing the excess oxygen to the particulate filter.
Claims16
A method for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter positioned downstream of an engine coupled to an energy conversion device in a vehicle, comprising:
- during first engine shutdown conditions with filter regeneration:
- increasing excess oxygen to the particulate filter by spinning the engine with the energy conversion device, and
- regenerating the particulate filter;
- and
- during second engine shutdown conditions without filter regeneration:
- decreasing the excess oxygen to the particulate filter.
A method for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter positioned downstream of an engine coupled to an energy conversion device in a vehicle, comprising:
- during first engine shutdown conditions with filter regeneration:
- increasing excess oxygen to the particulate filter by spinning the engine with the energy conversion device, and
- regenerating the particulate filter;
- and
- during second engine shutdown conditions without filter regeneration:
- decreasing the excess oxygen to the particulate filter,
- where the increasing of excess oxygen to the particulate filter includes increasing a throttle opening of a throttle positioned upstream of the engine, and where the decreasing of the excess oxygen includes reducing the throttle opening, wherein fresh air is introduced to the engine, and passed through to the particulate filter while the engine spins but does not combust.
A method for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter downstream of an engine coupled to an energy conversion device, comprising:
- during first conditions, stopping combustion and regenerating the particulate filter by adjusting engine speed;
- and
- during second conditions, stopping combustion and regenerating the particulate filter by adjusting an EGR valve.
A system for controlling a regeneration of a particulate filter, the system comprising:
- an engine having a plurality of cylinders;
- a particulate filter positioned downstream of the engine;
- a three-way catalyst positioned upstream or downstream of the particulate filter;
- an oxygen sensor in an exhaust conduit;
- and
- an electronic controller including a computer-readable storage medium with instructions to:
- adjust an energy conversion device to at least partially drive the engine,
- regenerate the filter by adjusting an operating parameter to deliver excess oxygen from the engine to the particulate filter,
- deliver excess oxygen to the particulate filter by adjusting an air-fuel ratio in one or more combusting cylinders, and
- adjust an amount of excess oxygen based on feedback from the oxygen sensor.
A method for controlling particulate filter regeneration with an engine coupled to a propulsion system motor, comprising:
- during stopped vehicle conditions, stopping combustion and regenerating the particulate filter by adjusting engine speed via the propulsion system motor;
- and
- during moving vehicle conditions, stopping combustion and regenerating the particulate filter by adjusting a ram-air valve.
