An isolated glycyl-tRNA synthetase (GRS) polypeptide of up to about 500 amino acids in length that comprises amino acid residues 367-438 of SEQ ID NO:1, or a GRS variant of up to about 500 amino acids in length that comprises a sequence at least 95% identical to residues 367-438 of SEQ ID NO:1.
