Abstract
The invention provides the compounds of formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising one or more compounds of formula I or intermediates thereof and one more of pharmaceutically acceptable carriers, vehicles or diluents. The invention further provides methods of preparation and methods of use of prodrugs including NO-releasing prodrugs, double prodrugs and mutual prodrugs comprising the compounds of formula I.

A compound of formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof:
- wherein,
- a is 0;
- B is S—S;
- A is CH2;
- A1 is CH2;
- D1 represents a therapeutic agent comprising one or more of the functional groups selected from the group consisting of —NHR1, —CONHR1, —SO2NHR1, —OSO2NHR1, N(R1)C(═O)NHR1 and —N(R1)SO2NHR1;
- wherein the N atom in said functional groups is either a part of or directly attached to L1;
- D2 represents a therapeutic agent comprising one or more of the functional groups selected from the group consisting of —OH, —SH, and —CO2H,
- wherein the O of —OH or the S of —SH or the C(═O) of the —C(═O)OH group is either a part of or directly attached to L2;
- E is CH2;
- L1 represents NR1—(CO)—O and L2 represents O—(CO)—;
- R1 represents H or a bond to the residue of the therapeutic agent at an atom other than the atom to which N is attached.
