An antimicrobial derivative of anacardic acid of formula (I),
- wherein R1 is H, C(O)CH3 or CH3;
- R2 is NO2 or H;
- R3 is NO2 or H;
- R4 is NO2, H or Br;
- R5 is OH or CH—R7, where R7 is C6H5COOH;
- and R6 is C1-C20 alkyl chain,
- wherein the derivative has a formula selected from the group consisting of:
