Abstract
The present invention is directed to the parenteral procurement of bodily-fluid samples. The present invention is also directed to systems and methods for parenterally procuring bodily-fluid samples with reduced contamination from dermally-residing microbes. In some embodiments, a bodily-fluid withdrawing system is used to withdraw bodily fluid from a patient for incubation in culture media in one or more sample vessels. Prior to withdrawing bodily fluid into the one or more sample vessels for incubation, an initial volume of withdrawn bodily fluid is placed in one or more pre-sample reservoirs and is not used for the incubation in culture media.
Claims30
An apparatus for obtaining a blood sample from a patient comprising:
- a needle having a lumen configured for insertion into the patient;
- a sample reservoir fluidically coupleable to the needle;
- a pre-sample reservoir fluidically coupleable to the needle, the pre-sample reservoir configured to receive and isolate a predetermined volume of blood withdrawn from the patient;
- and
- a single diversion mechanism operable to selectively control fluid flow between the needle and at least one of the sample reservoir and the pre-sample reservoir, the diversion mechanism having a first configuration such that fluid communication is established between the needle and the pre-sample reservoir, and a second configuration such that fluid communication is established between the needle and the sample reservoir, the diversion mechanism configured to automatically switch from the first configuration to the second configuration after the predetermined volume of blood is received in the pre-sample reservoir.
An apparatus for obtaining a blood sample from a patient comprising:
- a pre-sample reservoir configured to receive a predetermined volume of blood withdrawn from the patient;
- and
- a single diversion mechanism having an inlet port, a first outlet port and a second outlet port, the inlet port fluidically coupled to the patient and the first outlet port coupled to the pre-sample reservoir,
- the diversion mechanism operable in a first operating mode in which the inlet is fluidically coupled to the first outlet port and fluidically isolated from the second outlet, and a second operating mode in which the inlet is fluidically coupled to the second outlet port and fluidically isolated from the first outlet,
- wherein operation of the diversion mechanism in the first operating mode:
- a) allows blood to flow from the patient and into the pre-sample reservoir, and b) prevents blood from flowing to the second outlet port, and
- wherein operation of the diversion mechanism in the second operating mode:
- a) allows blood to flow from the patient and to the second outlet port, and b) prevents blood from flowing to the pre-sample reservoir.
A kit for obtaining blood samples from a patient comprising:
- a sample procurement device for withdrawing blood from the patient, the sample procurement device including:
- a needle having a lumen configured for insertion into the patient;
- a fluid communicator having a lumen fluidically coupleable to the needle;
- a pre-sample reservoir fluidically coupleable to the needle, the pre-sample reservoir configured to receive and isolate a volume of blood withdrawn from the patient;
- and
- a single diversion mechanism operable to selectively control fluid flow between the needle and at least one of the fluid communicator and the pre-sample reservoir;
- and a sample vessel including a culture medium,
- wherein the fluid communicator is configured to be removably coupled to the sample vessel.
A device for parenterally-procuring bodily-fluid samples with reduced contamination from a patient, the device comprising:
- a pre-sample reservoir configured to receive and isolate a predetermined volume of bodily-fluid withdrawn from the patient;
- a flow control mechanism fluidically coupled to the pre-sample reservoir, the flow control mechanism including a first member and a second member, the first member being slidably coupled to the second member and configured for movement between a first position and a second position, the second position different than the first position,
- the first position placing the flow control mechanism in a first configuration and establishing fluidic communication between the patient and the pre-sample reservoir,
- the second position placing the flow control mechanism in a second configuration and fluidically isolating the predetermined volume of bodily fluid in the pre-sample reservoir.
