Abstract
The invention relates to surface modifying macromolecules (SMMs) having high degradation temperatures and their use in the manufacture of articles made from base polymers which require high temperature processing. The surface modifier is admixed with the base polymer to impart alcohol and water repellency properties.
Claims28
An admixture comprising a base polymer selected from polypropylene and polyurethanes admixed with a surface modifier having a structure according to
- wherein
- (i) A is a soft segment selected from poly(diethylene glycol)adipate (PEGA), polytetramethylene oxide (PTMO), poly(ethyleneglycol)-block-poly(propyleneglycol))- block-poly(ethylene glycol), or polydimethylsiloxane block copolymer (C22);
- (ii) B is a hard segment comprising a urethane trimer or biuret trimer formed from hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) biuret trimer, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) trimer, or hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) trimer, and B′, when present, is a hard segment comprising a urethane;
- and
- (iii) each G is a surface active group comprising polyfluoroalkyls;
- wherein n is an integer from 0 to 10;
- and wherein (i) said surface modifier has a thermal degradation temperature of at least 200° C.;
- and (ii) said admixture is formed by mixing said surface modifier with said base polymer to form a mixture and annealing said mixture;
- and
- wherein when the base polymer is polypropylene, A is a soft segment selected from polymethylsiloxane block copolymer (C22) and poly(ethyleneglycol)-block-poly(propyleneglycol)-block-poly(ethyleneglycol).
