Abstract
A method for fractionating particles includes flowing a fluid having particles therein along a first channel, applying acoustic radiation pressure to the fluid, focusing the particles within the fluid into a single file line, moving the particles in a flow rate, applying acoustic radiation pressure to the fluid for a second time, focusing the particles based on size and acoustic contrast, producing at least two fluid fractions of the particles, and collecting at least one of the fractions.
Claims16
A method for fractionating particles, comprising:
- flowing a fluid having particles therein along a channel;
- applying acoustic radiation pressure to the fluid;
- focusing the particles within the fluid into a single file line;
- moving the particles in a flow rate;
- applying acoustic radiation pressure to the fluid for a second time;
- focusing the particles based on size and acoustic contrast;
- producing at least two fluid fractions of the particles;
- collecting at least one of the fractions;
- and
- drawing some of the fluid away from the channel to a side channel prior to the second application of acoustic radiation pressure in order to steer the particles to a different part of the channel.
A method for fractionating particles, comprising:
- flowing a fluid including particles in a channel;
- acoustically focusing the particles into a single file line in a first section of the channel using a first application of acoustic radiation pressure;
- drawing some of the fluid away from the channel via a tangential conduit emanating from the channel in a second section of the channel downstream of the first section so as to alter the trajectory of the single file line within the channel;
- acoustically separating the particles in the single file line flowing along the altered trajectory based on size and acoustic contrast using a second application of acoustic radiation pressure in a third section of the channel downstream of the second section;
- and
- collecting at least two fractions of the particles.
