Abstract
A method and device of power management for a networked radio frequency identification (“RFID”) system are disclosed. The described power management methods reduce the power consumption of battery-operated RFID readers and RFID tags. These power conservation methods increase the RFID system's hours of operation and decrease the cost by allowing the RFID readers and tags to function for a longer period of time before requiring charging or replacement of their batteries.
Claims16
A method for transmitting tag data read by a radio frequency identification (“RFID”) reader, the method comprising:
- activating a battery power sensor to monitor a battery level of a first RFID reader;
- receiving a low battery power signal from said battery power sensor when said battery level reaches below a predefined level;
- in response to receiving the low battery power signal, (i) informing an access point communicatively coupled to the RFID reader regarding the low battery level of the first RFID reader and (ii) filtering duplicate tag reads and incomplete tag reads to conserve power before tag data transmission;
- identifying a second RFID reader communicatively coupled to the first reader through an ad-hoc/mesh network, the second RFID reader being closer to the first RFID reader than the access point, the second RFID reader comprising a battery power sensor that has not generated a low power signal;
- if the filtered tag data is non-time critical tag data, transmitting the non-time critical tag data from the first RFID reader to the access point through the identified second RFID reader for conserving power;
- and
- if the filtered tag data is time critical tag data, transmitting the time critical tag data directly from the RFID reader to the access point.
A system for transmitting tag data read by radio frequency identification (“RFID”) readers, the system comprising:
- an access point;
- a plurality of RFID readers comprising a first RFID reader communicatively coupled to the access point, the first RFID reader comprising a battery and a battery sensor monitor;
- and
- an ad-hoc mesh network communicatively coupling the plurality of the RFID readers;
- the first RFID reader (i) to activate the battery power sensor to monitor a battery level of the first RFID reader, (ii) to receive a low battery power signal from the battery power sensor when the battery level of the first RFID reader reaches below a predefined level, (iii) in response to receiving the low battery power signal, to inform the access point regarding the low battery level of the first RFID reader and to filter duplicate tag reads and incomplete tag reads to conserve power before tag data transmission, (iv) to identify a second RFID reader in the plurality of RFID readers, the second RFID reader being closer to the first RFID reader than the access point, the second RFID reader comprising a battery power sensor that has not generated a low power signal, (v) if the filtered tag data is non-time critical tag data, to transmit the non-time critical tag data from the first RFID reader to the access point through the identified second RFID reader for conserving power, and (vi) if the filtered tag data is time critical tag data, to transmit the time critical tag data directly from the RFID reader to the access point.
