Image pickup device for wide dynamic range at a high frame rate

An image pickup device comprising:

• an image sensing device that includes:
• a first pixel group including a plurality of pixels arranged as a two-dimensional array in a semiconductor substrate surface portion that receives incidence light from a subject;
• and a second pixel group including a plurality of pixels arranged as a two-dimensional array in the semiconductor substrate surface portion in an area overlapping the first pixel group while the pixels in the first pixel group are not disposed in the same position as the pixels in the second pixel group;
• and
• a driving unit that drives the image sensing device in synchronization with a vertical synchronizing signal so as to provide timing difference between the exposure time of the first pixel group and the exposure time of the second pixel group by a unit of a vertical synchronizing time period of the vertical synchronizing signal and that lets the first pixel group and the second pixel group output a picked-up image signal.
